Physics workshop
A three-day physics workshop was held at the Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women, Malleswaram, recently. A total of 87 students from 20 different colleges participated in the workshop. The textbook ‘Concise Physics Vol 5 by Sarmistha Sahu’ was released by Prof. Joseph Samuel and the textbook ‘Concise Physics Vol 6 by Krishnamohan R., Narayan Sharma H.D. and Sarmistha Sahu’ was released by Prof. Supurna Sinha during the workshop.
Technical writing programmes

British Airways offer
Students travelling by British Airways to the U.K., the U.S., Canada and select European destinations can carry an extra piece of luggage weighing up to 23 kg in addition to the permitted checked-in allowance, which is 20 kg, between June 1 and October 31. This is a special offer for university students from India.
RiiT internship
The Raman International Institute of Technology’s internship programme was inaugurated on July 17 at Mysore by Girish Kumar Karunakaran, President, India-Nepal Operations, SPI, and Dr. Ravi Kumar, Special Officer, Visvesvaraya Technological University. The programme is a joint venture between the institute and various software industries. According to a release, Venkatesh S.V., MD and CEO of RiiT, stressed on the need for such initiatives for the mutual benefit of the internee and the industry. Other dignitaries who were present included the Dean of RiiT, Vatsala Bhat, and Associate Vice-President K.S. Subramanyam.
Cloud computing
The Department of Information Science & Engineering (ISE), Acharya Institute of Technology, Bangalore, hosted a two-week Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Advances in Cloud Computing” for the teaching and research fraternity of various engineering institutes across India, from July 1 to 13.
Sponsored by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the inauguration ceremony held on July 1 was presided over by H.D. Maheshappa, Principal, Acharya Institute of Technology, and T.S. Mohan, Principal Researcher, Education & Research, Infosys, Bangalore. The two-week programme saw academicians and cloud computing experts disseminate knowledge on cloud computing as a business model, sharing cloud tools that can be used in academia for research and development activities.
Education entrepreneurs
Pearson Education has announced a partnership with Village Capital, a funding firm, to support and invest in education entrepreneurs in India. The Pearson Affordable Learning Fund, set up last year to invest in low-cost private schools and other affordable educational solutions, will work with Village Capital to offer Indian entrepreneurs the chance to receive seed investment. The programme is restricted to ‘Edupreneurs’ who serve students in India and will see winners bagging up to $75,000 funding after being selected through a round of peer review by fellow entrepreneurs.

Engg. design contest
Students from the field of engineering are invited to participate in the fifth edition of DesignACE, the annual engineering design contest being organised by Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR), in partnership with SolidWorks Inc. The contest is open to all students across the four South Indian States and Pondicherry. The theme for this edition is “Innovations and Ideas for Lifestyle Improvement”. Students pursuing any engineering degree can apply. Top honours include a first prize of Rs. 40,000 and a trip to Europe to attend an engineering event.

Shopper marketing

Twinning programme
Manipal University has opened admissions to its international engineering twinning programme also known as ICAS (International Centre for Applied Sciences) for 2013. The programme designed for students aspiring to graduate in engineering disciplines from some of the best universities in the world allows students to study their first and second year of engineering in Manipal University (Manipal campus) and the third and fourth years in one of the 74 universities across six countries where they would receive their engineering or an equivalent degree. Award for NIAP
Bangalore-based National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIAP) received on July 16 the Sardar Patel Best Institution Award for its outstanding contribution in the field of animal feeding and management.
The award was received by C.S. Prasad, Director, NIAP, from the President, Pranab Mukherjee, in a ceremony held at the national capital on the occasion of the Foundation Day of Indian Council of Research (ICAR). The institute has developed farmer-friendly technologies and provides training in skill development of scientists, extension workers, field officers and livestock farmers.
