Entrepreneurship course

The Deshpande Foundation and Deshpande Educational Trust (DET) are inviting applications for the second batch of Master of Social Entrepreneurship (MSE) 2013-15, affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad. The two-year programme is packaged with 25 different courses that blend cutting-edge, practical experience with personal mentorship through real entrepreneurs.

Tablet for students

AppThoughtz, a Hyderabad-based IT software start-up, has launched a tablet “iTopper” for PUC students (Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) which is customised as per the Karnataka syllabus. iTopper comes with bundle of in-built applications that not only enable students to access content but evaluate their performance through a self-test method. The content has been curated and aligned to the teaching curriculum and approved by Cambridge University Press. Students can also prepare and take unlimited mock tests and perform better in the real-time environment while preparing for intermediate, JEE, EAMCET and NEET.

iTopper (195x118x11 MM) comes with a capacitive touch screen, 2.0 Mega Pixel camera, internal memory of 24 GB Flash and 1 GB DDR3 RAM, and external memory of up to 32 GB, and operates on the Android Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

New batch at XIME

Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship (XIME), Bangalore, welcomed its 19th batch of students on June 17. The batch consists of 180 students from 23 States. The batch has 48 per cent girl students and 49 per cent students with work experience. Anil Philip, Board Member, XIME, and Vice-President, IBM, inaugurated the week-long orientation programme for students. XIME has also inaugurated a new campus in Kochi.

Conference at MSRIT

A two-day national level conference on Frontiers And Challenges In Biological Organometallic Compounds (FCBOM-13) was organised by the Department of Chemistry, M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, on June 20 and 21 under TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme). For the inaugural function Bhatnagar awardee K.J. Rao (emeritus professor, IISc, Bangalore) was the chief guest.

A total of 120 participants from different institutions across India attended the conference and presented their research papers. Experts from Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad; Indian Institute of Technology-Madras; Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; National Institute of Technology, Surathkal; Bangalore University; and S.K. University, Anantapur, delivered lectures.

Save Energy programme

A group of engineering students from Shirdi Sai Engineering College, Bangalore, organised various events and activities at the Gopalan Innovation Mall, Bannerghatta Road, on June 8 to create awareness on saving energy. With a theme ‘SAVE ENERGY’, the students demonstrated the importance of saving non-renewable sources of energy through mimes, quiz contests, cultural events, etc. The students also displayed some innovative and eco-friendly projects at the venue. They demonstrated the projects to visitors as well.

Biodiversity festival

Green Foundation (under Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana), in collaboration with the Centre for Gandhian Studies and the Department of Political Science of Bangalore University, held an event highlighting biodiversity at Bangalore University on June 20. Highlights of the event were an exhibition on biodiversity, release of a book and video on “Women and Seeds”, and a seminar.

The Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, B. Thimme Gowda, inaugurated the exhibition. A short video documentary prepared by Green Foundation and the book on ‘Women and Seeds’ published by Pesticide Action Network in Asia and the Philippines (PANAP) were released.

Dialysis units donated

Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital, in collaboration with Rotary Club, Bangalore, and ICICI Prudential donated five dialysis units to be used by the underprivileged. The event was in continuation of productive collaboration between Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital. The event was inaugurated by Mohan Gurjar, President, Rotary Club-Bangalore, in the presence of Executive Director Vijayanand; Medical Director, Dr. Ramachandra; Additional Medical Director, Dr. Rangappa; and Medical Superintendent Dr. Govindaraju.

Tech meet

A two-day National Conference on Integration of Technology in Higher Education was held at AIMS, Peenya, Bangalore, recently. The event was organised by AIMS, Peenya, and sponsored by NAAC. The welcome address by CEO, AIMS, Dr. Kerron G. Reddy, was on innovation and technology and the role of young leaders in creating businesses with global perspective.

According to a release, she threw light on the interface between higher education and the requirements of the industry.

The chief guest, V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive VP & Ex-Officio Principal Secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment, enlightened the audience on various initiatives taken by the Union Government for integrating technology in higher education and also on specific programmes for teacher training and capacity building, in addition to initiatives taken outside the formal ambit of the education circle.

Scholarships

The School of Business and Economics at the U.K.-based Loughborough University is offering scholarships to students for its one-year postgraduate programmes in Management, Finance and Marketing, starting in October 2013. New batch at TAPMI

T.A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal, welcomed it 31st batch of PGDM and fourth batch of PGDM-Healthcare students on June 15. A total of 409 students were admitted. Thirty one per cent of them were women and over 90 per cent of the batch had completed either B.E. or B.Tech.
