IIHS courses for June
Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) has announced two Urban Practitioners’ Programme (UPP) courses for the month of June 2013. The course on Passive Solar Design, Daylighting and Simulations for Green Buildings will be held on June 14 and 15. The second course, Social Venture Design, will be organised from June 17 to 22. Both will be held on the IIHS Bangalore city campus.
The first course aims to equip participants with the practical know-how to undertake shading design and daylighting simulations on their own. It will cover basic concepts of solar passive design, which is an inherent component of daylighting buildings. The course faculty includes Gurneet, Director, EDS Pvt. Ltd., and Deepa, Senior Green Building Analyst at EDS.
The second course is a joint programme of IIHS and Acara Institute, University of Minnesota. It is an intense workshop for emerging social entrepreneurs, providing them facilitation and resources to successfully pilot and launch. The course will give participants an opportunity to design, develop and pitch a social business idea to a panel of investors and incubator representatives. The lead faculty for the course is Fred Rose who manages the Acara Challenge and its associated summer institute.

Coconut drilling machine
Final-year mechanical engineering students of SJB Institute of Technology have developed a machine that can pierce a hole in a tender coconut to drink its water and chop the fruit for eating with utmost ease and safety. The machine has a drilling and shearing mechanism that reduces human effort and makes the process safer. “The machine does not use electricity and comes as a relief to women and the differently-abled, who can now also get into this business,” says the team.
The machine can be made mobile by attaching a bicycle to it (hand or pedal operated). The students have designed the machine to store around 75 tender coconuts, so that trash can be reduced to an extent.
Angom Joshi, Arif, J. Dinesh Kumar, and Rasif Abdul Rahaman, under the guidance of Shankar D.R., faculty, department of mechanical engineering, designed the machine.
Mini-suitcase car
Karnataka Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande visited Nitte Institute of Technology (Yelahanka) and inspected a student laboratory where a mini-suitcase car has been designed by Nitte college students. Later, the Minister took a ride in the car.
Graduation Day
The 13th Graduation Day of HKBK College of Engineering, Bangalore, was held recently. A total of 423 students of B.E. and 47 students of MBA graduated for the academic year 2012-13.
Dell Challenge
Dell has announced the Dell Empowering Women Challenge, a global competition to encourage university students from any country, male or female, graduate or undergraduate, from any field of study, to propose initiatives empowering women and girls, thereby creating business opportunities and recognising female influence. The competition seeks to inspire at least 100 innovative ideas from around the world and will place an emphasis on the need to increase entrepreneurship in developing markets.
Fifty semi-finalists will be selected in September and will receive direct mentorship from members of the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network, a community of around 400 established female founders connected to Dell, giving those project teams the chance to develop their ideas with the help, experience and expertise of successful women and business leaders. One member from each of the top three teams will receive an all-expense paid trip to pitch their team’s idea at a special awards event in December 2013. The winning team will be announced at that event and will receive a $15,000 cash prize. All finalists will be automatically entered as semi-finalists for the 2014 Dell Social Innovation Challenge, Dell’s umbrella competition focused on social entrepreneurship.

University of Southampton, U.K., is inviting applications for its newly launched M.Sc. in Instrumental Analytical Chemistry. The one-year programme is structured around a solid core comprising three main analytical techniques – Mass Spectrometry, NMR Spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction. Each of these techniques contains a number of key common themes (data collection, analysis and management).

App for students
Education USA has recently launched a free mobile app which will provide international students with accurate, comprehensive, and current information about how to apply to U.S. colleges and universities. The mobile app is available free under ‘EducationUSA’ on both iTunes (Apple) and Google Play. If you don’t have a smart phone, you can try the mobile app in your website browser. The application allows international students to find an EducationUSA advising centre, engage via social media, receive scholarship information, view photos, access frequently asked questions, and contact EducationUSA advisers.
Sustainable Habitat Challenge
Ingersoll Rand has announced the Sustainable Habitat Challenge, as part of the CII Industrial Innovation Grand Challenge. The competition that provides an open innovation platform for participants including designers, architects, students and professionals, invites entries for Sustainable Technologies for Model Habitats in Emerging Economies. The Sustainable Habitat programme is an initiative of Ingersoll Rand by which it is collaborating with the larger community to help design a solution that will innovatively address the housing needs of emerging economies while optimising both natural and financial resources. By virtue of this challenge, the company will integrate and implement creative ideas and innovative concepts to build a set of low-cost dwellings on its campus in Bangalore that will utilise sustainable materials, solar technologies, water conservation, sanitation, security, remote health services, data management and other eco-friendly interventions.

IIP admissions
The Indian Institute of Packaging has announced the entrance exam dates for its two-year full-time PG Diploma in Packaging. The selection will be through entrance examinations at Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Delhi.
To be eligible for the exam, one has to be a graduate in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology (any one as main subject) or Agriculture/ Food Science or Engineering or Technology with minimum second class. Students awaiting results may also apply latest by June 10.
