Dayananda Sagar Institutions (DSI), Bangalore, inaugurated its “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Centre” recently. The objective of this centre is to create a platform for budding student entrepreneurs to forge ahead with their innovative product ideas, a release said.
Sujit Banerjee, Director, National Science and Technology, Entrepreneurship Development Board, V.R. Ferose, Managing Director and Senior Vice-President, SAP Labs India, and D. Premachandra Sagar, Vice-Chairman and CEO of DSI, inaugurated the centre.
Mr. Banerjee said the Union Government is keen on promoting the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship on technical campuses all over the country.
Mr. Ferose emphasised that entrepreneurship is a mindset and today’s students have great opportunities to explore as entrepreneurs and build enterprises.
Dr. Sagar reiterated that today’s India is a world full of opportunities and innovation is the mantra today.
A panel discussion on “Innovation and entrepreneurship” was also organised.
Social activities
A slew of social activities for students took place recently at the Seshadripuram Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), Bangalore.
The students and faculty of SIMS contributed funds to childcare centre Need Base India for procuring carpets, blankets, steel plates, geysers, water-purifier, etc.
N.R. Pandith Aradhya, president, Seshadripuram Educational Trust, presided over the function.
Wooday P. Krishna, honorary general secretary of the trust, delivered the inaugural address, in which he laid emphasis on the concept of “joy of giving” which should be inculcated at a young age in all so that they benefit.
Conference
The Life Science Department of Maharani Lakshmi Ammani College and Padmashree Institute of Management and Science, Bangalore, organised a national-level conference on “Computational Biology, Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences” and a hands-on workshop on “Proteomics and Genomics leading to Drug Target” recently.
The chief guest, M. Vijayan, DAE Homi Bhabha Professor, IISc., delivered the keynote address and emphasised on the role of macromolecular crystallography which is poised to scale new heights in the structure-based design directed towards drug development.
S. Krishna Kumar, trustee, Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College Trust, advocated the need for the prudent choice of course and career options for the younger generation.
Felicitation
NGO EnAble India held a felicitation ceremony for the students of its Career Centric Computer Training (CCCT) programme at Jyoti Nivas College (JNC) recently.
The highlight of the evening was the cultural programme put up by the hearing and visually impaired students for Shanti Raghavan and Deepesh Sutaria, who founded the organisation in 1999.
Sr. Elizabeth CS, Principal, Jyoti Nivas College, spoke to the students. “The students of EnAble India are an inspiration to all of us; in the way they face challenges so bravely. We must learn to be as perseverant and determined as them in our own lives.”
“We work to provide gainful employment and economic independence to people with disabilities so that they can live with dignity. Training is provided free of cost as the programmes are funded by corporate companies such as Wipro, Deutsche Bank and others which also provide placements to the students on completion of the course. We provide training not only in professional skills such as computer literacy, but also in life skills and mobility so that our students are not dependent on others,” said Pranesh Nagari, Director, EnAble India.
Competition
The Bosch Power Tools-National Institute of Design, Gadhinagar (NID) ‘India Changers’ National Industrial Design Competition 2012 culminated on the NID campus with four winners being chosen from a variety of entries received towards the theme of socially relevant innovations.
The panel of judges selected the winning team comprising Sanal Kuriakose, Madhusudhana K.P. and Yashwanth Kumar B.V. from Acharya Institute of Technology, Bangalore. Their concept of designing a street lighting system that is based on sun and wind energy, titled “eBelaku,” was the winner.
The system is sustainable, eco-friendly, trendy and durable and low on cost. Its multi-benefits of producing power, enabling groundwater-level harvesting and providing a source of shelter from sun and rain stood out.
The winning team received a specially designed contest trophy, created by renowned designer and judge Michael Foley, along with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.
