Seminar: The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Mangalore University, organised a two-day seminar on ‘Media in the contemporary world’ and a media festival recently.

Brij Kishore Kuthiala, Vice-Chancellor, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal, who inaugurated it said that students should adapt themselves to the changing technology.

B.P. Sanjay, former Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur, and former Director, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi said that the country already has the world’s third largest internet users after the U.S. and China. K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, spoke. G.P. Shivram, Chairman, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, made the introductory remarks.

Competitions were organised as part of the media fest. The overall prize was bagged by SDM College, Ujire. SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Mysore, was the runner-up.

Workshop: A workshop on research for those pursuing Ph.D. was conducted under the auspices of the State government at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management.

K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, inaugurated it. He stressed on the need to go for inter-disciplinary research.

Road safety: St. Philomena College, Puttur, in association with the Regional Transport Office, Puttur, organised a road safety week programme at the college recently.

S.B. Surendrappa, Regional Transport Officer, Puttur, asked the students to learn about traffic rules, regulations, signs and markings for safe driving. Leo Noronha, Principal of the college, said that pedestrians too should have knowledge about traffic signals and markings.

Talk on Tibet: Nitte Institute of Communication, Nitte University, in association with the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress and the Tibetan Student Association organised a talk on ‘Is Tibet a core issue in Sino-Indian relationship?’ recently.

Minister of Tibetan Department of Information and International Relations Dicki Choyyang spoke on the need for autonomy for Tibet. Taking the example of Nalanda, she said that the ties between India and Tibet go back thousands of years. The Tibetan system of medicine is inspired by Ayurveda. In the 10th century Tibetan Buddhism got renaissance through India.

Registrar of Nitte University M.S. Moodithaya spoke. Head of Nitte Institution of Communication Rakesh Katarey was present.

Conference: The Srinivas Institute of Management Studies organised a conference on ‘e-learning, e-business and e-governance’ on the Pandeshwar campus recently.

Srinivas Bhat, Senior Manager, Human Resources, Diya Systems, Mangaluru, inaugurated it. Research is an open school of thought, he said and also released the proceedings of the earlier conference on ‘Recent Trends in Computing & Information Technology’ conducted in August, 2014. A. Raghavendra Rao, President, A. Shama Rao Foundation, Mangaluru, presided.

Blood donation: Besant Evening College organised a blood donation camp recently. Yashavanth, faculty, Kasturba Medical College, highlighted the basic physical fitness required for donating blood.

He said that when blood is donated the blood cells get regenerated within three months and therefore a healthy person can donate blood once in three months. Principal of the college Carmelita Goveas presided over the inaugural function.
