AMU researchers develop waste disposal system

Researchers at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) claimed to have developed a waste disposal system that converts effluents into solid building material, thus reducing environmental damage caused by industrial discharge.

Poisonous effluents, including cyanide and fly ash, can be neutralized and be converted into a solid building material by a disposal technique that uses Portland cement, AMU researchers S.S. Shah and Malik Ahmad said in a paper published in the recent Indian Geotechnical Journal .

The major cause of pollution in Aligarh’s ground water is about 250 million litres of effluents discharged everyday by the electroplating and lock industry, they said.

The paper has been given the Professor A.V. Shroff bienniel award by the Indian Geotechnical Society this year, an AMU release said.
