The overall pass percentage in the Class XII State Board examinations, which included the results of students from both private and government schools, has improved by almost nine per cent from 74.63 in 2010 to 83.54 this year. Out of the 11,428 students who appeared for the examination this year, 9,547 have come out successful.
Results released by the Directorate of School Education here on Monday revealed that the pass percentage among students of government schools also saw a significant jump with figures improving by almost 11 per cent from 63.84 per cent in 2010 to 74.57 per cent in 2011.
Both the Karaikal and the Puducherry regions have shown a marked improvement with 81.32 and 83.95 pass percentages respectively. Among the 9,667 students—4480 boys and 5187 girls who appeared for the examination in Puducherry, 8115 had secured pass marks whereas in Karaikal, 1432 of the 1761 students who gave the exam, including 709 boys and 1052 girls, have emerged successful.
Like previous years, the trend of girls outperforming boys in the Board examination continued even this year with 86.31 per cent of girls securing pass marks compared to 80.21 per cent of the boys.
Overall pass percentage among boys in government schools was 68.13, up from 57.30 last year, while the number also increased in case of girls who secured 79.23 per cent as compared to 69.18 in 2010.
Director of School Education G. Panneerselvam said that the major reasons for the improvement in the results included filling up of vacancies of teachers and giving up the practice of promoting all students in Class XI irrespective of their performances.
G. Kavitha of St. Joseph of Cluny Girls Higher Secondary School secured the first rank in the Union Territory with 1186 marks.
The second slot went to Nirbhay Garg of St. Patrick Higher Secondary school, who secured 1183 out of 1200.
The third spot with 1180 marks was shared by T.R. Lakshmi Priya of Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, Archana Jayaprakash of St. Joseph of Cluny Girls Higher Secondary School and P. Kiruthiga of St. Patrick Higher Secondary School.
None of the top 20 rank holders this year had opted for Tamil as their second language.
