The name Johns Hopkins brings to our mind the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, which is a sister institution of JH University noted for its excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.

The university was opened in 1876. The university and the health system together is the largest employer in Maryland, the U.S. State often considered as an important hub for life sciences in the world.

Johns Hopkins contributes more than $10 billion a year to the State's economy. In common parlance JHU is often referred to as just Hopkins.

The university happily merges teaching and research of a high order. It is one the U.S. Universities that gets the highest research funding from the government. The focus of education is medicine.

Several research projects are interdisciplinary, combining engineering and medicine. There are great opportunities for those interested in the areas of robotics and computational science.

The university can take pride in its 33 Nobel laureates, many of them for their work in the areas of biology and medicine.

The latest winner is Carol Greider, who won the Nobel Prize in physiology/ medicine 2009, for her landmark discovery of the ‘enzyme telomerase', which has laid the foundation for novel studies relating to human cancer and diseases of aging.

The university has nine academic divisions:

School of Advanced International Studies

Krieger School of Arts and Sciences

School of Education

Whiting School of Engineering

School of Medicine

The Applied Physics Laboratory is a division of the university co-equal to the nine schools, but with a non-academic, research-based mission.
