A small stretch of the Chennai Bypass Service Road and the intersection of Bypass Service Road (towards Porur and Maduravoyal) and Kishkinta Road, West Tambaram, are in a poor state, giving commuters a tough ride.

“A huge crater at the junction poses a huge risk to motorists. To avoid paying tax at a toll-plaza on Porur Bypass Service Road, motorists tend to take the Maduravoyal Bypass Road or Chennai Bypass Service Road,” residents said. Moreover, a crusher unit is located on the thoroughfare.

S. Jayabalan, resident of West Tambaram, said, “Accidents occur frequently at the junction due to speeding heavy vehicles . Travelling on the thoroughfare causes severe back pain to motorists.”

Moreover, the thoroughfare lacks proper illumination and driving at night is tedious. But for a high-mast lighting facility at the junction, the thoroughfare does not have streetlights.

Pedestrians are affected the most by the absence of essential facilities.

The Kannadapalayam garbage compost yard, West Tambaram, is located near the junction. There, pigs, dogs and rodents can be seen in large numbers. Often, they get crushed by lorries and other heavy vehicles.

“Accidents are common at this junction. At least two or three fatal accidents occur every two to three months. Though the stretch is unfit for vehicular traffic, motorists and car-drivers drive recklessly, disregarding lane discipline and thereby endangering the lives of fellow road users.”

Things get worse during the monsoon, making it slushy and slippery. Motorcyclists and pedestrians have to exercise great caution while passing through the stretch.
