Virugambakkam residents demand a better library

Members of the Virugambakkam Residents’ Welfare Association (VRWA) have urged the Chennai Corporation officials to establish a library in their area.

“At present, a small library belonging to the Government of Tamil Nadu functions at AVM Nagar, Virugambakkam. However, as it is located at a remote place, this library remains unknown to many people. A library has to be constructed at the centre of the residential and commercial locality (Virugambakkam),” members of the Association and residents said.

The Association has submitted a petition to Chennai Corporation Mayor Saidai Sa. Duraisamy and MLA of Virugambakkam constituency Parthasarathy B.

At present, the residents go either to the K.K. Nagar or Saligramam State Library.

“A library can be established on the terrace of Chennai Corporation Gym or at an open space, both located in Elango Nagar, Virugambakkam. We have requested S. Elangovan, former councilor, Ward 128, to construct a library several times, but in vain,” S. Arumai Nathan, president, VRWA , said.

The Corporation should sanction adequate funds for constructing a library at the open space or on the terrace of the gym, he added.

“The Anna Centenary Library at Kotturpuram, is like an ocean. It has books for school kids. It has books for research scholars. It has facilities that enable visitors to comfortably read. A well-equipped library of international standards, on the lines of the Centenary Library, should be constructed in Virugambakkam,” K. Siva Kumar, a resident of Natesan Colony, Virugambakkam, said.
