An inadequate number of speed breakers on Dr. Ambedkar Street and Pozhichalur Main Road, Pammal-Pozhichalur, makes these stretches risky. Collisions are frequently reported from there.

In spite of the huge water pipes (for the Chembarambakkam Drinking Water Project) on both sides and the poor condition of the already-narrow road, the motorists indulge in reckless driving.

“It is good to lay speed breakers on the thoroughfares to alert the road users to slow down,” V. Francis, a motorist said.

“Speed breakers must have bright reflectors or should be placed near the street lights so that they could be detected at night. Also, the speed breakers will induce some discipline in motorists who drive recklessly,” said S. Shalini Radhakrishnan, a resident of Pasumpon Nagar.

“The thoroughfares, which under the jurisdiction of State Highways Department, have been re-laid well. However, the department should take steps to install speed breakers, especially at the first right turn on Pozhichalur Main Road and second right turn at the junction of Pozhichalur Main Road and Venkateswara Nagar, Pozhichalur,” R. Raghavan, a resident of Lakshmi Nagar, Pozhichalur, said.

Due to absence of speed breakers, rash driving has become common here. Moreover, the thoroughfares do not have a dedicated walkers’ path making life difficult for pedestrians.

“The vehicular traffic is increasing by the day on these thoroughfares and people driving through these stretches do not bother about other motorists and pedestrians. As the roads are relatively free, most motorists drive at great speed posing a threat to pedestrians. The authorities concerned should lay footpaths and speed breakers,” said A. Mary, a resident of Pozhichalur.
