With separate western commodes for the physically challenged, men and women, exclusive wash basins and solar panels to provide electricity, the Namma Toilet facility near Taramani MRTS should receive a good response. However, delay in opening the facility has encouraged miscreants to misuse it.

The toilet was ready over four months ago.

“The toilets are kept locked but it was broken into by some miscreants and they have again locked it,” says R. Anandan, parking attendant at the Taramani MRTS.

Many people like him who work on that stretch say open defecation can be stopped to a great extent if the toilet is opened with all the promised features including water and regular maintenance, as the ones in Tambaram and Chromepet have been.

The toilet is located next to the MRTS parking area and should draw train commuters, cab drivers who ferry IT professionals from companies on MGR Salai and autorickshaw drivers.

“Most of us come at 6 p.m. and leave after 2 a.m. Our vehicles are parked here and such a public toilet, if maintained well, should be used by many,” says K. Loganathan, a cab driver.

Although a public toilet is located on MGR Salai, cabs drivers say it is not maintained well and not many use it.

A Corporation official from the zone said Namma Toilet would be opened soon.

“We are planning to open a number of facilities including a couple of parks, Amma Unavagam at Taramani and the toilet, so the delay,” said the official.

It has been built at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh and with a slew of amenities.

“Another ‘Namma Toilet’ is coming up at Mandipakkam bus stop. Also, two e-toilets are proposed for the zone,” he added.
