Residents of Ranga Road have formed ‘Clean N Green Ranga Road,’ a WhatsApp group to keep their neighbourhood clean. The group which was formed in mid-December has a strength of nearly 50, which includes residents from individual houses and apartments, says Ashok, one of the members.

As the group is at a fledgling stage, it restricts itself to conducting pilot projects.

“As of now, our immediate goal is to minimise the quantity of waste getting dumped in the bins on the streets. For this, waste needs to be segregated in the houses. We have approached a private firm that deals with non-degradable waste. It has agreed to come and collect the waste, if informed two days in advance. Of the 30 apartments in the locality, we have considered only three apartments — RR Foundations, Jains Asvarya, and Nivedha’s Komalam. In the next phase, we will focus on management of degradable waste,” says Ashok.

The group has also sought guidance from residents of an apartment in MRC Nagar. “They are into this initiative for over two years now. They have been quite successful in their efforts to keep the neighbourhood clean. So we thought of taking some lessons from them.”

It also has plans to organise an orientation session for maid servants to educate them about waste segregation. Residents of Ranga Road and others from nearby neighbourhoods can join this WhatsApp group by writing to cngrangaroad@gmail.com
