With a soft demeanour, a gentlemanly trot and a sunny outlook, Johnny is quite the poster boy for canine resilience. Earlier this month, he was found homeless with severe cataract in one eye. When dog-lover Jayshree Ramesh rescued him, her veterinarian assessed that he was too weak for surgery on account of low haemoglobin count. In the weeks that followed, a healthy diet saw him bounce back from his troubles. The six-year-old Pomeranian regained his appetite, was quick to make friends with any dog (or person) he met, and is now all set to have cataract surgery.

Says Jayshree who often functions as a rescued dog’s bridge to a better life – “Johnny will be put up for adoption after his surgery. There are a lot of people, especially youngsters, coming forward to adopt adult dogs these days, compared to even just a year ago”.She reveals that a family has already expressed interest in him after seeing his story on Facebook. She adds that her source of motivation is the pictures she receives from people who have given homes to her past rescues. “Most of them are spoilt rotten after adoption”, she laughs. “These second chances are a real blessing for them”. Jayshree pays for these rescued dogs’ medical treatment herself, and this often takes several weeks of care until they are healthy enough to be adopted. She admits that the pressure of costs can get daunting, with the rising number of rescues, and is now hoping to network with like-minded people who will contribute to the cause on a case-by-case basis. Despite witnessing several pet abandonments, she believes that times are changing for the better, based on the growing number of people who open their homes to them, and cites her latest success story Appu, a Pomeranian-cross who was rescued from homelessness and is now the apple of his owner’s eyes. “When I see a picture of Appu and his owner Praveena on their morning walk, my day is made”, says Jayshree. If you’d like to contribute towards Johnny’s surgery, get in touch with Jayshree at 9841022214 or jayshreer917@gmail.com. Copies of medical bills and periodic updates on Johnny’s recovery and adoption will be provided to donors.
