Secrets from the kitchens of Mylapore

May 24, 2014 05:44 pm | Updated 05:44 pm IST - Chennai:

Traditional food always has a following. Fresh evidence for this comes from Mylai Maami Food Festival, an event at Deccan Plaza, Royapettah organised to celebrate dishes from the kitchens of Mylapore.

The food festival, on till June 1, will feature dishes by Prema Maami and Chef Anil Kumar.

Prema Nambiraja was introduced to cooking at a very young age. “I started cooking when I was just 10 years old. Spending hours in the kitchen, I would experiment with dishes till I got them right. As I grew old, I developed more skills,” she says.

She was then married to a chef and became one herself at a restaurant in New Jersesy.

“I cook South Indian food there and some of my dishes are extremely popular,” she says.

This is the first time she is organising a food festival like this.

“The GM of the hotel is a family friend and he invited me to participate,” says Prema, a resident of West Mamblam.

The dishes to be served at this festival include karum jeeraga, panagam, neer more (welcome drink), murukku, araichu vitta sambar, karivepilai kozhambu, paruppu urundai kozhambu, variety sevai, thenga saadam, puliyodharai, mor kalhi, maladu and poli.

However, her personal favourites are the regular everyday items.

Deccan Plaza is at 36, Royapettah High Road. For details, call 6677 3333
