A five-member team from the Regional Transport Office has seized a school van at Karapakkam on Friday morning, when it was on its way to Mettukuppam to pick up children. The school vehicle is reported to have fallen short of many safety parameters.
According to an RTO official, M. Mana Kumar, the vehicle belonged to Montfort School near Perungudi. “It did not have a number plate, window grill, front and rear bumper. Many dents were found on the surface of the vehicle. Fire-extinguishers and first-aid boxes were not in place. The drivers who were not in the uniform did not have licence, permit, and RC book.”
“It is a case of negligence. The school management should not have allowed the vehicle to ply. As of now, the vehicle has been detained at RTO, South Chennai, Sholinganallur,” he said.
“Despite frequent awareness programmes and inspection drives, it is annoying to spot a vehicle in such a deplorable condition,” he said.
