Walking barefoot in a park may not be your idea of good health. Two Corporation officials believe the practice promotes wellness.

N. Mahesan, assistant commissioner, and R. Murali, executive engineer, Zone XII, Alandur, received the ‘Best Innovation Award’ for providing pebble pathway for walkers at two parks. This ingenious acupressure method is believed to be healing.

The pebbled pathway has been provided at Madha Nagar Park, Mugalivakkam, and Independence Day Park, Nanganallur.

“It was Mayor Saidai Duraisamy’s idea that we worked on. Walking barefoot on pathway scattered with pebbles provides an acupressure effect. They can do it after completing their routine walking exercise,” says Murali.

Work is under way to set up a similar facility at South Sector Park, Adambakkam.

The duo has also set up a herbal garden in Kumudham Nagar Park, Mugalivakkam. The names of the plants and their medicinal value have been written down on a small plank. “The park was set up at a cost of Rs. 53.66 lakh. The idea is to create awareness among the public on the importance of herbal remedies,” they say.

The initiative is being replicated at Independence Day Park, AGS Colony Park, and Madha Nagar Park. The ideas will be implemented in other parks too, depending on availability of space, Mahesan added. The projects were implemented under the guidance of Regional Joint Commissioner (South), Anandakumar.
