For years, the residents of Nanganallur, Puzhuthivakkam (partly), Moovarasampet and Pazhavanthagal were supplied power from 110 kilo volt amps transformers from Pallvaram and Velachery.

A couple of years ago, the power supply from Pallavaram was stopped. Till date, the residential localities (mentioned above) get 33 kilo volt amps power from the Velachery transformer. This benefits 50,000 consumers, of which 24,000 are in Nanganallur and 26,000 in Puzhuthivakkam (partly), Moovarasampet and Pazhavanthagal.

“With the increased number of home appliances, the transformer (Velachery) is unable to provide quality power supply. For years, in the event of a power outage in any of the feeder transformers in Velachery or Pallavaram, power from the other feeder transformers were pressed immediately. Now with power supply from Pallavaram transformer being suspended, an unexpected power outage in Velachery transformer can send the residential localities into pitch darkness. We have to suffer for more than five hours without power,” the residents said. “The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board sought permission from the Kancheepuram Collectorate to set up a 110 kilo volts amps transformer on a State government site at Tirusulam foothills six months ago. Till date, a decision on granting approval has not been taken. We have taken up the issue with the elected representatives. Yet, no headway has been made in obtaining approval,” residents said.

Official sources in the electricity board said approval has been sought in granting permission from the Collectorate. A decision is yet to be taken in this regard by the Collectorate. “Regarding restoration of power supply from the Pallavaram transformer, the matter has to be consulted with the higher officials before arriving at a decision,” the sources added.
