The Coastal Security Group (CSG) has procured all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) for Elliots Beach, Mahabalipuram and Marina Beach to save lives. Each of these beaches gets one quad bike.

“In a year, nearly 60 cases of drowning get reported from the Marina, Elliots Beach, Thiruvanmiyur, Royapuram, Neelankarai and Mahabalipuram beaches. These quad bikes facilitate swift rescue operations. In the second phase, other city beaches will get these ATVs,” says Additional Director General of Police C. Sylendra Babu.

These ATVs will be employed for patrolling on the coast too. A good number of ATVs have been sanctioned for similar purposes at the beaches in the southern districts. In addition, these ATVs would be used to combat poaching of endangered species, including sea cucumbers in Rameswaram and Olive Ridleys along the Chennai coastline, he says.
