On last Sunday around 200 residents of K.K. Nagar Sector-2 participated in a public-police meet at the playground. In this, they discussed measures to help prevent crime in their locality. The meet was addressed by Inspector R. Durai (Law and Order), R-7 K.K. Nagar Police Station. Stating that residents must be alert at all times, the inspector read out a list of preventions they must take. The list, printed as a pamphlet, was given to all residents.
Advice
Advising those planning to go out of town, to leave their names, address, and the date of return with the nearby police station, Inspector Durai said that regular patrol would be sent to the address. He also said that jewels and cash must not be kept inside locked houses. He also suggested the residents to install burglary alarms in their houses as a preventive measure.
Preventive measures
“If window air conditioners are not given proper protection with grills, they can prove to be an easy entry point into homes. Articles such as cell phones, laptops, purse should also be kept away from windows while sleeping. Big flats must install CCTV cameras at the entrance for security. To prevent vehicle theft, residents must lock their two-wheelers at night,” said the inspector.
He emphasised that as per Commissioner's order, senior citizens (with no caretakers living with them), must register their names and address with the nearby police station, following which a sticker would be stuck at the residence and police would regularly patrol the area for their safety.

K.K. Nagar Sector-2 gave names of two such couples to the inspector during the meet. The number 95000 99100 was given to the residents for sending a SMS if they notice any suspicious movement by strangers or to register complaints in case of petty thefts or crime. On receiving the SMS, the Commissioner's office would alert the nearby police station personnel who in turn would take appropriate action.
Issues
Following Mr. Durai's address, the residents informed about travel cars being parked illegally in the sector, to which the inspector promised action.
Residents also complained about four houses in the locality kept locked for years now.
Mr. Durai said police will look into the matter.
