Why spend on toys, when Sandhya can teach children to make their own, asks Vipasha Sinha

Kids are made to attend all kinds of classes during the summer vacation. But have you heard of any where they are taught how to make their own toys?

Thirty-year-old Sandhya Ranjith is organising a workshop in Kodambakkam where she will teach kids between ages 6 and 12 to make a variety of playthings.

“I focus on things that can be made from items that are easily available at home –– for instance, water bottles and caps. Apart from that, I also teach paper mache crafts, guiding children to make fun things such as a kaleidoscope, a bow-and-arrow and a pen stand,” says Sandhya.

These workshops are ongoing and one has to call in advance to book seats.

“Those interested can choose three consecutive days till June 9 and we can fix the date. I don’t want to invite a large group for the workshop, because I will not be able to give my individual attention to the students,” she says.

Sandhya left her lucrative job after turning a mom. With a lot of time in hand and a desire to do creative work, she started conducting workshops for children. “I have always been a creative person. As I was at home and had a lot of time to myself, I started making jewellery and a host of other things out of scrap material. I then thought, ‘Why not teach it to others?’ and a series of workshop started,” she says.

The three-day workshop will also include toys made of moulding clay. All the ingredients and tools will be provided and the kids can take their creations home.

The workshop will be held at Old. No. 14/8, New no 3/8, Mathangi Flats, R N Nambiar street, Kodambakkam.
