S. Shanta, a resident of Pammal, is on cloud nine and excited as she comes to know the news that the State government has decided to accord ‘taluk’ status to Pallavaram from January 2016. For, she expects that many residents in the area will be immensely benefited by this move.
She believes she would not have to make frequent trips anymore to the Alandur taluk office, located on First Main Road in Nanganallur Cooperative Housing Society.
Earlier, people living in areas as far away as Rajiv Gandhi Salai and East Coast Road – besides those in Alandur, Ullagaram–Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam, Pallavaram, Anakaputhur, Pammal and Peerkankaranai and adjoining areas – had to come to Tambaram to get important documents that needed the Tahsildar’s endorsement.
“This news has brought great relief to people like me. Earlier, I had to travel to Nanganallur to get my community certificate for my children. The new taluk office that will come up in Pallavaram will be just two to three km from Pammal. For any of the government schemes, community certificate, legal heir certificate, income-certificate, old-age pension, voter id, ration card and other official documents, people will be able to contact the Pallavaram taluk office, S. Shanta points out.
V. Santhanam, president, The Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram (FCWAP), says, “We had been demanding that the State government accord ‘taluk’ status to Pallavaram ever since Alandur came under the jurisdiction of civic body. The decision to elevate Pallavaram as a separate taluk will reduce the workload on officials, and will be of great help to residents. The residents have wholeheartedly welcomed the government’s decision. The FCWAP welcomes this move by the State government.”
“The Pallavaram Taluk office should be centrally-located and easily accessible by all modes of transport. A huge number of staff should be deputed at the new Taluk office to handle the needs of residents,” he adds.
The residents have also made an appeal to the State government to create a Corporation headquartered in Tambaram and aggregate local municipalities (Pallavapuram, Pammal, and Anakaputhur), and village and town panchayats, Tirusulam, Chitlapakkam, and Pozhichalur into the upgraded Corporation.
