The new post office on Thirumangalam Road in Anna Nagar West has special features, including those for the differently-abled and separate counters to pay electricity bills and to attend to customers who have savings account.

The 7,500 sq.ft single-storey office, which has been built on the land allocated by Tamil Nadu Housing Board, is expected to be opened within a fortnight.

Some of its other features are a parking slot for two-wheelers and cars, a 400 sq ft visitors’ hall, round-the clock security, cushioned seats, separate cabin for the Postmaster and a rest room for the staff.

“The facility is expected to have an ATM and offer online banking service soon,” says an official.

Earlier, for more than a decade, the office was functioning from a small dilapidated room on the first floor of a rented building on the same stretch. Residents from Anna Nagar West, Mogappair, Padi, Nolambur and Ambattur visit the post office. Besides poor ventilation and seating arrangements, visitors also had to wait for long time.

“The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh and will be similar to other new post offices built across the country,” says P. Narasimhulu of P.N. Construction, who has been awarded with the building contract.

“We hope that the new post office is opened at the earliest,” says V. Rajagopal, president, Anna Nagar West (Phase – II) Residents Welfare Association.

Sanctioned in May 2013, work began three months later in August that year after necessary building designs were received from the chief engineer office of the Civil Wing of the Department of Posts in New Delhi.
