Neglected for long

The flyover connecting GST Road with Hasthinapuram is an eyesore. It needs a makeover, writes T.S. Atul Swaminathan

May 19, 2014 07:22 pm | Updated 07:58 pm IST - Chennai:

The Chromepet-Madras Institute of Technology flyover connecting Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST) with Hasthinapuram and Chitlapakkam Main Road (Tambaram-Velachery Road) is in a poor condition. The flyover was thrown open to vehicular traffic and pedestrians in 2006.

But, it already looks as if it is well over a decade old. “The paint has started to fade away. The landscaped garden below the flyover is used as a dump yard. The saplings are not watered and cared for. On the Eastern side (Nehru Nagar), the landscaped garden is used to dump construction debris, cable wires, and broken junction boxes,” T. Narasimhan, a resident of Chromepet, said. The Highways Department (City Road Division) should take appropriate action immediately to renovate and beautify the flyover. Moreover, the sub-joints on the road surface of the flyover have been broken leading to the formation of potholes, he adds.

“The road surface has disintegrated in some places. Two-wheelers, especially pillion riders, are at the risk of being overthrown from their vehicle,” R. Venkat, a motorist, said.

The steps leading to the eastern side (Nehru Nagar, Bashyam Nagar) are used by anti-social elements to consume liquor in broad daylight. People, to avoid waiting, risk their lives by crossing the railway tracks to go to Hasthinapuram and Chitlapakkam.

“A few months ago, the expansion joints were replaced on the flyover. A fresh coat of paint work will be done after the elections are over. Regarding lightning, we will soon write a letter to the Pallavapuram Municipality,” Highways officials said.
