Bright purple and yellow flowers of table roses welcome visitors to St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union Primary School at Perungudi. As you walk further and go into the classrooms, you will see vivid murals staring at excited children.

In an attempt to enhance student experience, the school, both on the inside and outside, has been painted with bright colours.

The murals were painted by volunteers of Outreach, the social initiative programme of Cognizant.

Hang out a little longer on the campus and you will probably see students watering lily, jasmine, croton and other creepers.

The NSS students of KCG College of Technology, Karapakkam had donated 50 saplings to the school. And the students of the school have been nurturing them since the beginning of the academic year.

“We have divided the students, from Class III to V, into groups to nurture these plants. It serves as a practical lesson for them,” says P. Annapoorani, headmistress of the school.

Murals depicting concepts that students will learn in the classroom were painted when the school had closed for vacation.

On one of the walls, a clown is juggling different shapes in different colours.

On another, a mango tree lists out the months of the year. In another room, a school boy’s balloons depict fruits and vegetables.

“These paintings create an ambience conducive to learning and also help students explore and assimilate various concepts the fun way,” said a volunteer involved in the initiative.

Over the next few months, they plan to paint educational murals in the remaining classrooms as well. Annapoorani says she is grateful to councillor M. Janakiraman who sponsored identity cards for the students.
