The majority of people going to Sindhu Sadan, a temple in Egmore, make a ritual visit to the Sindhi specialities stall put up by J. Lakshman Das at the place of worship. Every Sunday, between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., the 61-year-old sets up shop in front of the Sadan spreading out his Sindhi specialities on a table, including papads , namkeens, kheecha, vathalas and other snacks.
Lakshman Das is carrying forward the business started by his father Jaman Das. “I was working as a salesman in a textile shop and was also helping my father. After his death I decided to continue this business of selling products at the Sindhu Sadan,” says the Ayanavaram resident who has been selling the products for the last 15 years.
Some of the products are made at his home. The crispy papads are sourced from Mumbai for its authentic taste.
“Sindhis are crazy about papads . They do not have their food without it. It is an anytime snack and we get them the best variety at affordable prices,” says L. Taruna, Lakshman’s daughter who helps him at the stall. One kg of rice papad is sold at around Rs. 240.
Lakshman Das does not own a store and has not expanded his business but is a content man.
“I don’t look at great margins. I am content with what I am getting after helping at the temple,” says Lakshman, who is a Sindhi.
On the other days of the week, Lakshman does door delivery of products. “Sometimes I get bulk order and at times I don’t get any,” says Lakshman who is always on the go. For orders, call 99629 82972
