Zone 10 of Chennai Corporation has spruced up the medians on a section of Arcot Road, from Vadapalani police station to the bus terminus.
Zone officials have put up new stainless steel grilles on the medians and have planted shrub plants such as exora hybrid and ficus. The lamp post at the end section have been removed and re-installed in the centre section of the medians as part of a beautification effort.
The work on sprucing up the medians will be extended by another one-and-a-half-kilometres, till Alwarthirunagar Annexe.
Apart from this, the Zone is soon going to place steel garbage plastic bins at important public places such as Vadapalani Andavar temple, bus terminus, Kurungaleeswarar temple, Koyambedu, Vijaya Hospital, and Vengeeswarar temple, Aruna Colony, Vadapalani, for the public to dispose of plastic wastes.
The Zone has identified areas where large volumes of plastic wastes are being dumped.
“The collected plastic wastes in the bins will be recycled. The hazards of plastic wastes are numerous. The surroundings are littered with discared plastic bags presenting an ugly and unhygienic scene. They are dumped in the drainage system, resulting in blockage. As a result, maintaining the drainage system becomes a problem. And an unhygienic environment prevails, resulting in health problems and the spread of water borne diseases. People should be aware of the dangers of using plastics,” Zone officials said.
Stickers will be posted on the recycling plastic bins to create awareness among the people that plastic wastes have to be thrown into the bin, and that usage of plastics and their indiscreet disposal could be hazardous to the environment.
