Life on the streets of N.S.K. Nagar and Kamala Street, Hasthinapuram, Chromepet is not easy. They visibly lack basic civic amenities.

Poor condition of the interior roads, lack of de-silting work in storm water drains and improper disposal of waste are some of the problems faced by the residents. As the thoroughfares are narrow, the Municipality’s conservancy vehicle is unable to enter the streets for door-to-door collection of garbage.

The residents dump the trash on the road and in the sewer drains, making it a permanent breeding ground for mosquitoes. “When it rains, the roads become slushy and slippery and the stretches become unmotorable. The road has not been laid for years,” the residents said.

“We are forced to face the problem due to poor road conditions. Adding fuel to the fire, a few residents have encroached upon the sewer drains,” the residents said.

The drains have not been de-silted for years. In the evening, mosquitoes buzz about in large numbers. The Municipality has failed to de-silt the drains and control the pest population. The mosquito menace has reached unprecedented levels, residents pointed out. A few residents are apprehensive about the outbreak of contagious diseases. The Municipality has paid scant attention to the issues in the area, causing residents to burn accumulated garbage on the streets. We have told the authorities concerned several times, but things have not improved, the residents added. When contacted, the chairman of Pallavapuram municipality, K.M.R. Nissar Ahmed, promised to alleviate the residents’ woes.
