Nine high-ranking professionals from different parts of the city are all set to entertain people with timeless melodies at a concert today. The event will take place at Sir P.T. Hall, G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar, from 7 p.m. onwards.

Today’s performers were once bathroom singers, but G.D. Sharma, a senior HR professional, encouraged them to launch themselves as singers.

“I have always been interested in music and would perform at school and college. As an HR professional, I meet many people. During such interactions, I found out that there are many like me who are passionate about music.

They enjoy singing, but never got to practise or perform due to their tight work schedules. I gathered such people and formed Geet Gaata Chal in early 2012. Most of the members of the group are people whom I have recruited or are my clients,” says Sharma.

It started with a group gathering and singing for the love of music. They realised they were good and started taking it seriously.

“We practise at my place in T. Nagar, at least thrice a month. I also have a karaoke set, which helped us practise. It started as a hobby and then we slowly started performing at events, which include family get-togethers, corporate shows, weddings and other functions. Some of the event managers also approached us for performances,” he says.

The group sings Hindi, English, Bengali and Malayalam songs. However, for their show on November 2, they will be reliving the golden era of music. “Around nine of us will be singing memorable songs of 1950 to 1970s. We have titled it ‘Retro Music Nite’. This event is a tribute to Chennai, which has always appreciated songs from Bollyowood.”

Apart from Sharma, the performers are Dr. Geetha Jayaram, V. Ramesh, T.R. Krishnan, S. K. Raja, A. R. Subramanian, G. Shivasankar, Shweta Ravishankar and Ram N. Ramakrishnan.

Entry is by invitation only. Invitation can be received by writing to the mail id geetgaatachalchennai@gmail.com
