While the recent spell of rains gave residents across the city a respite from the heat, it brought only misery to residents on a small lane off Camp Road, Selaiyur.
Following the rains, they street has been inundated with rainwater mixed with sewage.
This problem is said to be the result of illegal sewer lines on Camp Road and indiscriminate dumping of trash in the sewer drains.
Residents point out the problem is persistent as a few street-food stalls dump leftovers for the day in the sewer drains. A good many of the other commercial establishments do the same thing.
The trash chokes the sewer drains, leading to sewage overflow during rain, causing inconvenience to residents. The sewage water also enters houses. The street never escapes sewage stagnation during rain.
Residents are annoyed that despite the stretch experiencing sewage stagnation every time it rains, the authorities concerned have not taking any steps to put an end to this. They also point out that the pothole-ridden road has not been re-laid for years.
“Once the stagnating sewage recedes, the pothole-ridden road becomes slippery.
To reach the main thoroughfare, we go through an open land. Taxis and autos refuse to come to this stretch citing these bad civic conditions. In the evening, it is a struggle as the pathway leading from the main road to the open space is encroached by food stalls. The open space is dumped with all kinds of trash. Despite a garbage bin, food stall owners and the staff at commercial establishments on Camp Road, dump trash on the drains and in the open space,” residents add.
“We are unable to even sit inside the house due to the odour. Things are worse during the rainy season, as mosquitoes continue to swarm in large numbers. We hope the authorities concerned take action at the earliest,” they say.
