The Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram and Chromepet submitted a memorandum recently to K.N. Ramachandran, Member of Parliament, Sriperumbudur.

“It seeks the cancellation of the order by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) forbidding construction of buildings in five wards of Pallavaram,” says V. Santhanam, president of the Association.

Thousands of people have built their homes in the five wards in Pallavaram, which ASI has declared ‘megalithic sites’. Owing to this, the inmates cannot make alterations in their houses or sell/mortgage their homes without a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from ASI.

The Association has moved the High Court and as the process is taking time, it has also submitted a petition to the Chief Minister’s cell.

“We request the MP to take up this issue at the Centre and to scrap the order that affects thousands of residents. Also, the residents cannot mortgage their homes to avail educational loans or to meet other uncertain expenses,” the Association members said.

“Ramachandran, while receiving the memorandum, said that he has already raised the issue in the Parliament during the call attention motion and assured the members that he would soon convene a meeting with the Minister for Culture and the residents,” Santhanam said.
