The effect of unauthorised parking along Kilpauk Garden Road is felt in various areas in the vicinity: as traffic snarls near Chinthamani junction, on HPCL Avadi Road and also on Flowers Road near Sangam multiplex which connects the stretch (Kilpauk Garden Road) with Poonamallee High (PH) Road.
People from Anna Nagar, ICF, Ayanavaram, Padi, Retteri, Kolathur, Puzhal and Red Hills use the eight-km-long Kilpauk Garden Road to reach Anna Salai, Broadway, G.P Road and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai.
Further, some motorists take Kilpauk Garden Road to avoid certain sections of Poonmallee High Road, navigating which has become difficult because of the raft of one-ways that have being created along the stretch as well as on those in its vicinity.
Unlike the PH Road, Grand Northern Trunk (GNT) Road and J.N. Main Road, the Kilpauk Garden Road is less congested and free of any infrastructure project works.
More importantly, the stretch connects many street lanes and interior roads with the main PH Road at many traffic points.
As a result, motorists find it convenient to use the stretch to reach P.H. Road much quicker. “Also, traffic signals are less in number along the stretch. So, we save a lot of travel time,” said Mohammed Iqbal, a resident from ICF.
However, with unauthorised parking on either side of the stretch, vehicles are often reduced to a crawl.
The stretch, lined with medical clinics and educational institutions, is busy round the clock. Parents who come to drop and pick up their children park their vehicles on the narrow stretch, further reducing the road width. In fact, summer vacation spells relief for many motorists taking the stretch.
“Despite repeated fines imposed on those who park their vehicles in ‘no parking’ zones, motorists continue to flout the rules,” said a Traffic Police Officer.
