For pedestrians crossing the busy junction where Five Furlong Road, Race Course Road and Chakrapani Street intersect, the experience can be frustrating.
It can be risky too. Cases of overspeeding are not uncommon here. The absence of a traffic signal increases the risk from speeding motorists.
“High element of risk”
“The other day, when I was coming from Race Course Road and taking a turn to go to Chakrapani Street, I saw a speeding cab driver from Five Furlong Road and I stopped my motorcycle in time to avoid a collision. After 9 p.m., the element of risk escalates on this stretch,” R. Sridhar, an IT employee, said.
“It is difficult to cross the junction during rush hour and chances of being fatally hit by speeding vehicles are high,” K. Gajendra Kumar, a pedestrian, said.
A alarming number of vehicles coming from Five Furlong Road and proceeding towards Race Course Road do not bother to stop at the junction.
Similarly, many vehicles coming from Chakrapani Street take a rash right turn to proceed towards Five Furlong Road.
There is a speed-breaker at the entrance of Five Furlong Road. It is however common to see motorists coming from Race Course Road and going towards Five Furlong Road driving fast even while negotiating the speed-breaker.
The pedestrians are the worst-affected. Some walkers continue to cross the road even while the vehicles take a turn.
“The authorities concerned must take steps to repair the traffic signals and install a pedestrian signal post,” said S. Desikan, another pedestrian.
