Plea to expedite UGD work in Irumbuliyur

The work on Abhirami Nagar Road has been left incomplete for more than six months. The delay is putting road users to needless inconvenience

Residents of Abhirami Nagar, Periyar Nagar, Nithyananda Nagar, T.T.K. Nagar and Krishna Nagar, Irumbuliyur, have requested the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), State Highways Department and the Revenue Department to expedite the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) work at the earliest on Abhirami Nagar Road.

“In October last year, the Highways Department began to widen the Grand Southern Trunk Road between Tambaram and Irumbuliyur road-over bridge. The 1.5km-stretch is one of the most accident-prone spots on the Highway because of narrow road space. As part of the road widening, construction of the UGD and walkers’ path has also begun,” M. Chandrasekaran, a resident of Irumbuliyur, said.

“The Abhirami Nagar Road serves as a link road to other localities. The UGD work has been left incomplete for more than six months, making it difficult for people to access other areas through the dug-up road,” he pointed out.

A few residents allege that the NHAI officials blame the Revenue Department for the delay, saying that the distance for road widening was not measured properly.

The residents say several attempts to meet the officials of the Revenue Department have been in vain.

“The open drains are becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes and an unbearable stench emanates from them throughout the day. As iron rods have been placed on the drains, pedestrians find it difficult to navigate the stretch at night,” the residents pointed out.

Meanwhile, the residents of Abhirami Nagar have also requested the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation to shift an electrical post on the road.

“The wires from the post pass through the balcony of a home and are sagging dangerously,” residents added.
