The Raja Annamalaipuram Residents’ Association recently organised a nature walk for children at a Chennai Corporation Park, located on Seventh Main Road, R.A. Puram.

More than 20 children participated in the walk.

The walk began with a short talk on birds in the park. The resource person was Prabha Bob, a resident of Seventh Main Road, R.A. Puram.

Birds such as Coppersmith Barbet, Woodpecker, Kingfisher, Treepie, Babbler, Tailor bird, Parakeet, Golden Oriole, Drongo and Cattle Egret are spotted at the park. Prabha showed the children images of the birds and played the sounds made by the birds and gave interesting facts about each bird.

The second part of the programme focussed on vegetable garden at the park, where chillies, brinjal, lady’s finger, cluster beans and tomatoes are grown. This garden has been established and maintained by RAPRA. Professor Lakshmi Kanthan explained to the children how vegetables are formed.

And then, the professor took the children around the herbal garden in the park and explained to them the medicinal properties of each plant.

The walk proved to be an educative experience for the children.
