Residents of Maxworth Nagar, S. Kolathur, are at their wits’ end over the lack of basic civic amenities in their locality. The 15-street, serene residential locality, spread across a radius of 1.1 kilometres, lacks streetlights, good roads, stormwater drains, drinking water supply and a sewage system. Residents have requested the Kovilambakkam village panchayat to ensure better civic amenities in the locality.

After sunset, the interior streets of the locality are engulfed in darkness. And these streets are uneven, muddy and rocky .

There are no streetlights in the streets.

A few are found in a few places, but they serve only as showpieces. Bad roads coupled with poor illumination acts as a major hurdle. “To be on the safe side, we avoid venturing out after nightfall as much as possible,” says P.C. Kesavan, a resident.

The conditions of the interior streets are so pathetic that they are unfit for travel. We have complained about the lack of basic civic amenities to the Panchayat innumerable times. Till date, no action has been taken by the panchayat to improve civic amenities, he added.

“We are exposed to serious health risks as the residential colony lacks stormwater drains and a proper sewerage system. When it rains, the area gets inundated owing to the lack of stormwater drains. There are vacant plots in the area that are full of water, which have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The lack of proper sewerage system has compounded the problem of residents. During the recent spell of rain, sewage entered a few houses and bore-wells,” the residents said.

The residents have requested the Chennai Corporation to take the area into its jurisdiction.

When contacted, the Assistant Director, Panchayats, Kancheepuram, he promised to look into the civic grievances and do the needful.
