Quite a number of men in cricket gear are busy getting ready for a match at the location of debutant director Shanoob’s Second Innings . The location for the day is a school ground at Edappally in Kochi. Rajeev Pillai, who plays the hero, is in an animated discussion with a group of guys, including some of his Celebrity Cricket League (CCL) teammates. He proceeds to the crease and plays a few of his signature shots for the camera.

“This is not a film based on cricket and is, in fact, the romantic journey of Manu Madhav (Rajeev Pillai). Parvathy Maria Columbus (Aishika Sharma) lives in the neighbourhood and is madly in love with Manu. He, however, does not reciprocate her feelings. He works as an executive in a company but his life comes to a standstill when he learns that he has a fatal illness that will cut short his life in three months. That is when he realises the value of true love,” says Shanoob, who has studied filmmaking from Vancouver Film Institute and has assisted Tamil director Venkat Prabhu in Goa and Saroja . The cast includes Kadhal Sandhya, Siddique, Richa Panai, Anil Murali and Sunil Sukhada. Second Innings , adds the director, “is a romantic comedy about getting a second chance in life.”

Rajeev Pillai, who rose to fame after his CCL performances, says: “Frankly, I love cricket more than I love movies. I am so crazy about the game that I know most of the sport’s statistics by heart. I got noticed after being a part of CCL and I am so excited about it. My character in this film lives life on his own terms but the shocking news about his illness leaves him shattered. How he comes back from the situation is what the story is all about.”

Second Innings is being produced under the banner of Red Rabbit Creations. Cinematographer is Vinod Bharathi. Stills are by Sunil Guruvayoor.
