Actor Surya’s latest dubbed-in-Telugu ‘Brothers’ (‘Maattrraan’ in Tamil) on Friday hit about 400 cinema theatres across Andhra Pradesh. Film-lovers in Australia, Canada, UK and USA too got to see it in about 80 screens. Director K.V. Anand, who has received a good response in Teluguland with ‘Veedokkade’, followed by the runaway success of ‘Rangam’ can be rest assured about getting lucky three times in a row. Good performance by Surya, as conjoined twins till the first half, the sheer technical excellence provided by Director of Photography Sounder Rajan, lilting music of Harris Jeyaraj and some moving work by writer Shashank Vennalaganti are some of the highlights.
Anand has really come up with exciting locales for the film, including Ukraine in the erstwhile Soviet Union, where a sizeable chunk of the scenes were canned, apart from shooting in Jordan for the duet in the first half. Whether it is the action sequences or the dance moves, Surya has polished an inimitable style of his own. Kajal has proved that she is good enough, more than just being eye candy. Interestingly, the actor and his brother Karthi dubbed their voices for the conjoined twins.
That apart, the hero himself was admittedly excited about ‘Brothers’ and ‘Maatran’. “We did not want it to be too much of an experiment but we did try to be different. We have tried to set a trend and we hope people take to it,” said Surya, when contacted.
“We put in our best in every film and try to improve,” he quips, when asked about what was different about working earlier on ‘7th Sense’ directed by A.R. Murugadoss and now ‘Brothers’ with Anand. And as for the long-time need expressed by his Telugu fans, he says he would be in a position to announce a straight film in Telugu very, very soon. How soon, one wonders, yet?
