It’s not just the film that’s a hit; the saris worn by Jyotika have become a rage too. A few saris were sourced from Sundari Silks, T. Nagar. “Most of the saris Jyotika wears in the film cost anywhere between Rs. 600 and Rs.1,500,” says R. Manmohan Ram, managing partner, Sundari Silks. “The sari she wears in the scene where she meets the president of India is the only expensive one, costing around Rs. 9,000. All the others are ideal for everyday wear. This perhaps connected with the audience.”

Arundhati Menon of SAMASTA, who has designed a few saris for the film, says, “The beauty of the saris is that they’re simple and elegant. The ones we have provided are made with natural yarn. They are handwoven and block printed by hand. As they are lightweight, they are easy to wear. With adequate accessorising, these saris can stand out even at a wedding function.”

That a celebrity like Jyotika has worn such beautiful saris could help promote the six-yard fashion statement among youngsters. Arundhati adds, “Nowadays, youngsters hardly wear saris. Even when they do, it’s only on special occasions. I hope this film will inspire more young women to wear handwoven and handcrafted saris.”
