The superhero flick of the year is finally here. And it lives up to its high expectations. Marvel and Disney's latest outing is the perfect entertainment recipe for this summer. This movie has the popular heroes in town teaming up to save Manhattan (and the world) from extra-terrestrial villains.

The Tesseract, a cube of perpetual energy, forms the crux of the movie. Dr. Erik (Skarsgård), reprising his role from “Thor”, is working to harness the Tesseract's powers, overseen by SHIELD Director Nick Fury (Jackson). However, the Tesseract opens a portal in space and Loki (Hiddleston), Thor's exiled brother, arrives in Earth.

Heroes unite

Having made a pact with an alien ruler, Loki is in Earth to use the Tesseract to open a portal which will allow the aliens to enter Earth and help him conquer it. In return for the army, Loki is to give the Tesseract to the ruler. Enter the ensemble of superheroes: Iron Man (Downey Jr.), Captain America (Evans), The Hulk (Ruffalo), Black Widow (Johansson), Hawkeye (Renner) and Thor (Hemsworth).

Though their initial disagreements get to you in the first half, you leave that behind when they join forces against Loki and his alien minions. And they do this in true superhero style. Each hero has his and her fair share of attention in the movie, with no one overshadowing the other.

Well packaged

Whedon has done a good job of maintaining the balance between the heroes while ensuring each gets their spotlight moments. Watch out for Downey Jr. with his one liners and Cobie Smulders in a supporting role as Maria Hill, Fury's associate.

“The Avengers” is a thorough entertainer and will leave you gushing about your favourite heroes. The final stand between good and evil is spectacularly shot with lots of action and cinematic superhero moments.

Bottomline: Watch this movie, it'll make your day.
