Onbathula Guru

What it is about…

Kosmos and Boss Films’ Onbathula Guru is produced by R. Sivakumar and S. Sivakumar. The story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by P.T. Selvakumar. Vinay and Lakshmirai play the lead, while Sathyan, Premji, Aravind Aksah, Chams and Mandira form the rest of the cast. ‘Power Star’ Srinivasan shakes a leg for a song. Director K.S. Ravi Kumar appears in a guest role. K has scored the music. The audio CD of the film was released by actor Vijay and received by director Ravikumar. Onbathula Guru is a laugh riot, with an interesting message thrown in.

Music highlights

‘Vaa machi,’ written by Na. Muthukumar, is a folksy number featuring three singers, M.L.R. Karthikeyan, Mukesh and Velmurugan. A simple but catchy tune, the song has an interesting section based on the old-time hit ‘Raajavin Paarvai Raniyin Pakkam.’ ‘Theera Theera,’ by the same lyricist, is an upbeat, fast-paced song targeted at college goers, with a comic opening by actor Sathyan. The song is sung by Anand Aravindakshan, Sean Roldan, Premji and K. ‘Vidhavidhamaga,’ written by Madhan Karky and sung by Vijay Prakash and Chinmayi, is highly romantic. Various string instruments such as the guitar, the banjo and the harp enhance the song’s appeal. ‘Alayadhe Summa Summa’ is the title number written by Gnanakaravel and sung by K. Thavil beats backed by electronic rhythms dominate the song which also features rap by MC V-Key and MC Rude from the popular Tamil hip hop band ‘Tupakeys’. The same lyricist’s ‘Maida Maidhanam has been sensuously rendered by Priya Hemesh, which has an interesting bulbul thara bit.

What they say…

Producers R. Sivakumar and S. Sivakumar: We are basically from the garment export industry. We have earlier distributed Nanban and Thuppaki . We met director P.T. Selvakumar and during our Nanban days, he outlined a tale to us. We found it interesting and asked him to make it into a movie. That’s how we ended up producing Onbathula Guru with loads of entertainment.

Director P.T. Selvakumar: I started as a journalist. I have also produced a movie Bandha Paramasivam , which was remade into Hindi as Houseful 2 . Directing is my childhood ambition and I was biding my time. Onbathula Guru is an out-and-out comedy, with good songs and sentiment — something the entire family can enjoy.

Hero Vinay: I have played a lover boy in my earlier films, but my character in this is completely new. So I worked hard to change my body language and acting, which is sure to evoke the right response from the viewers. I liked the way the film progressed so I gave my dates in bulk to speed up the shooting. I can’t wait to see the audience reaction to the film.

Music director K : Mysskin’s Yudham Sei marked my debut as a music director. I had earlier scored the music for three short films, directed by Mysskin, Sasikumar and Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi. Soon after, Yudham Sei came my way. I went on to do Aarohanam directed by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan and Mugamoodi by Mysskin. Onbathula Guru is a fun film and all the songs have been aptly scored for each situation.
