A still from Ambikapathy

Actor Dhanush is excited about his upcoming Hindi-Tamil bilingual Ambikapathy . “My role is intense,” says the actor. It’s a romantic entertainer filmed in Banaras. His co-star is Sonam Kapoor, who is thrilled about her first film in Tamil. A.R. Rahman has scored the music. The film is directed by Anandan L. Rai and produced by Krishika Lulla for Eros International. The dialogues are by John Mahendran.

A masterplan

Director A.M.R. Ramesh is known for directing films based on real-life incidents. His Kuppi was on the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and his most recent film Vanayudham , on forest brigand Veerappan. Now the director is said to be working on the script of yet another side of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination — which begins with Rajiv’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi meeting Nalini, one of the accused in the assassination. “ Kuppi showed how one of the accused Sivarasan was nailed by the police. The current film showcases how the assassination was planned. The film will be shot in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi,” the director says.

Life’s a song

After giving us hits such as Veyil and Angadi Theru , director Vasanthabalan’s getting ready with Kaaviya Thalaivan . It’s said to be a love story based on the lives of yesteryear singers K.B. Sundarambal and S.G. Kittappa. “The Tamil-Telugu period film has Siddharth in the lead,” the director says. Apparently, he chanced upon material about the lives of the much-in-love couple and was inspired. Here’s a nugget — immediately after Kittappa’s demise, Sundarambal refused a few good offers. Much later, she had to be coaxed into acting and was paid Rs. 1 lakh, the highest for any actor then! The film, produced by Sasikanth of Ynot Studios, will have music by A.R. Rahman.
