Kajol is looking for a comeback. “We have locked a script with Ajay Devgn Films but still there is a lot left before we make a formal announcement,” says the versatile actress, who was last seen in We Are Family . “I am not dictating that I want to play this or see myself in that image. I want to be surprised by the scripts that I am offered.” The good thing, she adds, is female actors are no longer there just to add the “ornamental value”. “I won’t say that the industry has started making women-oriented films, but yes, the roles are more character-fit rather than just costume-fit.” Talking about the shelf-life of the Hindi film heroine, Kajol puts the onus on the audience. “Most of our films are about love stories and audiences don’t reject a middle-aged hero romancing a 23-year-old girl.”
Kajol avers that having babies and taking a break from an acting career was not an accident. “It was a conscious decision as I wanted to experience motherhood and it made me learn new facets of life. Through the babies I learnt how not to judge people beforehand. We tend to make opinions not just about people but also about objects. When you see kids dealing with life without any preconceived notions it makes you questions your behaviour.”
The word supermom is bombarded at us through advertisements but Kajol, who is the brand ambassador of diaper brand Huggies, feels every mother is a super mother. On the increasing emphasis of the mother’s role in bringing up boys, Kajol says, “I believe we are realising the value of relationships but should not forget that the mother is also influenced by the society she lives in.” She says there should not be any generalisation because orphans have gone on to become heads of states. “I want to make my son a good human being but the society he lives in will also influence his personality.”
