Actor Ramki, who’s making a comeback to tinseltown with three films, says he wants to play important roles
Ramki is getting ready for a strong second innings in Tamil cinema. After a hiatus, Ramki will be seen reprising important roles in three movies. “Actors on a comeback typically pin their hopes on one movie. I’m glad to have been offered three films — Masani, Biriyani and Vaaimai,” says Ramki. His immediate release would be Masani, which, he says, is a supernatural-horror. “Masani can be slotted with the likes of Chandramukhi, Kanchana etc. It is funny, but also has that supernatural angle to it. Many such movies have become hits of late.”
Why did he choose this film as his comeback vehicle? “The film’s director L.G. Ravichandran was looking to cast a lead actor from the previous generation for this role. And he was convinced only I would be apt for the role,” he says.
Ramki plays a village landlord and is paired opposite young Iniya. Does he still prefer lead roles or is he prepared to accept his age? “Do I look so old?” he laughs. “I have been around for more than 25 years. I’m hoping that this time around, I get to play roles that are important to the film but not necessarily central to it.”
What can we expect of him in Venkat Prabhu’s Biriyani and Vaaimai? “I have been asked not to speak about Biriyani, but it is an important role. In Vaaimai, I play a CBI officer,” he says.
