The posters of Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla seem to be catching eyeballs with its ‘quirky’ designs
The posters of Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla, which releases in theatres today, is bait; the title, backdrop, et al have caught the imagination of those who have seen the posters.
And that is exactly what the designers behind it, Sreejith N. and his design firm Old Monks, hoped to achieve.
“When V.K. Prakash (VKP), the director of Natholi… and Shankar Ramakrishnan the script writer for the movie told me the title of the movie, I was at first, taken aback. It was an unusual name for a movie. But then, when the duo explained the concept to me, the name seemed to fit the bill and I was hooked. We wanted to reel in the audience’s attention right from the title design. When you hear Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla, the images that come to mind is “quirky”. We have tried to capture a surrealistic feel in our design as the title design has to reflect or give the viewers a hint of what to expect from the film. Normally, we manipulate fonts to suit our needs for the title but for Natholi…, we designed the title ourselves.
“It took us two weeks of ‘scribbles’ to get it right. The end result – the title is shaped like a fish,” says Sreejith.
To complement the ‘fishy’ title, the team at Old Monk brought out illustrated pictures of the movie’s lead pair – Kamalini Mukherjee and Fahadh Faasil, which features them underwater, as teasers.
“It resembles pop art,” says Sreejith.
The posters that came out later juxtapose location shots of the actors against water.
“VKP is a man on the move. Usually, when doing posters for a movie, we have a separate photo session for it. However for Natholi…, we worked with the location shots which were pretty good.
“As natholi, is a fish, water is an element we have highlighted in the backdrop. One feels as if the characters are underwater. For instance, there is a shot of Fahadh in a living room. With a play of colour and light, one feels as if the set is underwater.”
Old Monk had designed the posters for Bachelor Party and Spirit to name a few. They are now working on the posters of ABCD, Anju Sundarikal and Amen.
