‘Rapunzel', a Grimm Brothers classic, is being retold by Disney as “Tangled”— a delightful film, delivered as a solid animated feature that will satisfy modern audience.

Storyline

Mandy Moore voices Rapunzel, a lonely girl who has been sheltered in a tower her entire life by ‘Mother' Gothel voiced by Donna Murphy. Rapunzel yearns to go out into the world and see what it's like.

Luckily, she meets Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi), a dashing and charismatic bandit, who accidentaly finds the tower and climbs in to hide. Rapunzel takes him captive and strikes a deal with Flynn: she convinces him to take her to see the mysterious lights (flying lanterns) that have appeared every year on her birthday and, in return, she will give him back his loot.

And so, they're off on a fun ride full of singing with thugs, daring escapes and more adventure. The original tale is altered to give a different story where the prince is a thief and Rapunzel is a princess instead of a commoner.

Characters

Flynn Ryder, who is little like Aladdin, is a ubercool and fun loving bandit who does not care about the world only himself. Rapunzel is kind and innocent, who seems to be a damsel in distress in the beginning but helps Flynn to escape from the guards and Maximus with her 70 feet long hair. Flynn becomes selfless, after he starts loving Rapunzel and decides to mend his ways.

All the characters even the minor ones like the ‘Pub Thugs' are portrayed well. The non-vocal characters Pascal and Maximus are well etched. Pascal, pet chameleon of Rapunzel, is cute and playful. Maximus is the Royal horse, who is determined to capture the elusive Flynn. He is not only more like a hound with great sniffing capabilities, he can also fight with a sword better than a man. Mother Gothel, being the antagonist, isn't as wicked as the other Disney women characters like Maleficent, Lady Tremaine or Cruella De Vil.

The music has been scored by Alan Menken, who has already scored for a couple of Disney flicks like “Beauty and the Beast” and “Enchanted”.

Bottomline : It's one of the best animated films I've seen in quite a while. The casting is good and the movie is hilarious. The film really shines in the visual effects. So, get ready to be “Tangled” to this fairytale.
