Vijay Sethupathi arrives looking tired. He has been shooting all night for his comedy film, Idarkuthaaney Aasai Pattai Balakumara . “I slept only three hours last night,” says the actor. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration if one were to say that Vijay Sethupathi is on the cusp of stardom. With several films under his belt and several more waiting to be signed, many would say that he is already a star, but Vijay responds to these comments with a smile.
On May 1, Vijay Sethupathi’s Soodhu Kavvum , a film in which he plays the role of a middle-aged man leading a team of cons, releases all over Tamil Nadu. What does this film mean to him at this early stage of his career? “It is a very important film for me that would determine whether I should experiment with my roles,” he says.
In his short career, Vijay Sethupathi has also silently heralded an independent film movement in Tamil Nadu. How was it possible for him to trust directors who have not worked with big directors? “I never ask directors with whom they have worked with before. For me, it is the script and the way these directors narrate it, that is important,” he says. The young actor is also getting into production with a film titled Sanguthevan . What drove him to get into film production as well? “I like the script so much that I wanted to be involved in it in every way possible. When the producer of the film said that he would not be able to concentrate on the production, he asked me if I would do it. I jumped at the opportunity,” he signs off.
