It is Saji Surendran’s turn to narrate yet another tale of friendship in ‘Fo(u)r Friends’.

The team of ‘Fo(u)r Friends' is on cloud nine. Naturally. It is Kamal Hassan who is appearing in a cameo in the film. It is after more than two decades that the thespian is doing a film in Malayalam.

The shooting of ‘Fo(u)r Friends,' which talks about the “amazing friendship between four friends,” is going on at various locations in Kochi. Jayaram, Kunchacko Boban, Jayasurya and Meera Jasmine play the four friends in the film that has been scripted by Krishna Poojappura and directed by Saji Surendran.

It was Jayaram who took the initiative to get Kamal Hassan on board. “I think the play on the title and the mood of the film struck a chord with Kamal sir,” says Jayaram. Adds a visibly excited Saji: “Not even in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would direct Kamal Hassan! He agreed to do the role the moment we finished narrating the storyline. The scenes in which he appears were shot in a day in Chennai. He was friendly and supportive. He even added some of his own experiences to his dialogues and his involvement was just unbelievable.”

Serious theme

Quite unlike Saji's earlier films – ‘Ivar Vivahitrayal' and ‘Happy Husbands,' this film is not an out-and-out rom-com.

“Although there is lots of humour, ‘Fo(u)r Friends has quite a serious theme,” says Saji.

Looks like Saji has also joined the friendship bandwagon. The film is about the friendship that develops between four strangers from four different backgrounds. The four soon become the best of friends and embark on a journey together.

The location for the day is the arrival terminal at the Cochin International Airport. The crew have their work cut out for them as a large crowd of onlookers have gathered at the venue. Jayaram, Kunchacko Boban and Jayasurya are cooling their heels inside a room in the terminal as they wait for their turn in front of the camera. Just like they are in the film, the actors appear to share a great camaraderie off the camera too and chorus that they are all are having a fabulous time shooting for the film.

In the film, Jayaram plays Roy, a rich orphan, while Jayasurya plays an uneducated local goonda called Amir, who will do any job to earn a living and take care of his sister. Kunchacko Boban is Soorya, an MBA graduate and musician. He is in love with his girlfriend but her parents do not approve and they send her to Malayasia. Meera Jasmine dons the role of Gauri, a medical student whose life is made miserable by her step-mother.

The scene for the day has Roy, Amir and Soorya about to set off for Malaysia. They are waiting for Gauri to join them and their story is unveiled through a series of flashbacks, as they wait for her.

Remix of a super hit

The super hit song ‘Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge…' from the yesteryear classic ‘Sholay,' originally picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, is being remixed for the film by music director M. Jayachandran.

‘Fo(u)r Friends' is being produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam under the banner of Mulakupadam Films. Anil Nair is the cinematographer. Stills are by Mahadevan Thampi.
