South Indian filmmakers, including veteran K. Balachander, consider Vizag as the ultimate destination to film romantic entertainers. Not surprisingly, director Kanmani, of offbeat film Naa Oopiri fame, chose Visakhapatnam for his yet untitled movie. This past week the unit helmed by debut producer A. Udayashankar filmed a key scene on the lead pair Yashwin and Nikhita Narayan at the Submarine Museum, Ramakrishna beach.

In the scene, the young man is eager to know about the girl. He starts a conversation to get to know more about her. She is all smiles but evades the answers. She enjoys teasing him and this naturally annoys the young man but he doesn’t show it. Not the one to give up easily, he continues to probe her. Actor Yashwin shows natural ease in his portrayal. This scene was shot at the entrance to the submarine by cinematographer Malleshwar.

“This scene is of light banter. The story is based on the super hit Marathi film, Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai which itself is a hilarious romantic entertainer with a fresh feel. We made improvisations to suit to our nativity. The girl who is born and brought up in Hyderabad comes to Vizag for the first time, for some reason. In a new place naturally one tends to meet various kinds of people, new situations and will have life’s new experiences. Likewise our heroine too meets a few characters; prominent among them is our hero who takes an interest in her. The story focuses mainly on these two characters. It is a very different screenplay with crisp dialogue (by Yadavalli). Among the other characters she meets in her journey are Venumadhav and Kondavalasa, leading to more hilarious situations. In this feel good story all the characters are inspired from life around us. They are neither contrived nor larger than life images. After shooting a few days in Hyderabad we came to Vizag to complete the talkie part and the five songs. We are covering almost all the wonderful locations here – Kailasagiri, Jagadamba center, Poorna Market, the famous beaches and Araku,” said Kanmani during the break. He adds that they are trying to find a suitable title.

Incidentally producer Udayashankar is making the film in Tamil too. “Once we wrap up shooting the Telugu version here, we plan to leave for Madurai to start production on the Tamil version with the same lead pair. Yashwin will be making his Tamil debut.” Kanmani wraps up the conversation. The tea break time is over and the lead stars are ready to face the camera for the next scene. The bilingual is slated for release in December.
