National award-winning Malayalam film actor Thilakan is dead. He was 77.
Thilakan, who had acted in around 200 films and had won the national award for the best actor in a supporting role, died at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram around 3.30 a.m. on Monday after battling with multiple organ failure over the last one month.
Thilkan's body would be kept for public viewing at the Victoria Jubilee Memorial Town Hall in Thiruvananthapuram from 11 a.m. and cremated at the electric crematorium around 4 p.m.
Thilakan was born at Ayroor (now in Pathanamthitta district) on July 15, 1938. And he was born to act. His tryst with acting began while he was still at school. Acting – or theatre, to be more precise – was his vocation. It did not take him too long to make a mark as an exceptional performer on stage. His mentor P.J. Antony was his biggest influence in his theatre days.
Though he made his debut in cinema in 1972 with Periyar, it was with K.G. George’s Kolangal (1981) that he truly arrived in the tinsel town. As a drunkard, he put in a superb performance in a brilliantly written and directed film. It was followed by Yavanika, another masterpiece from Geroge, in which Thilakan played a theatre manager.
The film went on to attain cult status in Malayalam cinema, and though it was Mammootty, as sub inspector Jacob Eraly, who gained most from its success, Thilakan too made a huge impact.
Films like Panchagni, Dhwani, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal, Rithubhedam, Jathakam and Nadodikkattu established him as a versatile actor.
Then came Kireedom, in 1989. As Achuthan Nair, an ageing police constable who sees the dream for his son getting shattered, his performance was critically acclaimed. Many of his scenes with Mohanlal from Kireedom shows his mastery in acting.
Now, roles were written for him. A luxury often only the superstars could boast of.
Like in 1980s, the golden age of Malayalam cinema, the 90s also saw Thilakan giving life to one memorable character after another. He was the hero in films such as Kattukuthira, Perunthachan, Santhangopalam, Gamanam and his performances were no less than the heroes in films such as Sandesam, Kilukkam, Georgekutty C/O Georgekutty, Radhamadhavam, Kauravar, Sphadikam and Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal.
Age did not wither him as the new millennium too witnessed masterpieces from the actor. Films like Ekantham and Achan and more recently Indian Rupee and Ustad Hotel reminded us, yet again, that he was in a class of his own.
Ekantham fetched him a special jury award in 2007. He had won the National award for the best supporting actor for Rithubhedam in 1988.
He won the State award for the best actor twice, for Perunthachan (1990) and Gamanam and Santhanagopalam (both released in1994). He was the recipient of the second State best actor on six occasions, beginning with Yavanika (1982); the last was for Kattathoru Penpoovu (1998).
He would be a strong contender for an award in Ustad Hotel, one of his last releases, too, as the jury meets to decide the State Awards next year.
Thilakan, of course, had dominated the headlines more for controversies than his films over the last four years. He took on the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), which expelled him and he also faced a ban. Politicians and cultural icons, including Sukumar Azhikode, batted for him, but he was not part of the mainstream cinema for a while. But these couldn't stop Thilakan from acting.
Thilakan returned to deliver an impressive performance with Indian Rupee, which fetched rave reviews.
“I have never got as many phone calls as I did for Indian Rupee and that made me happy,” he had admitted. “I think people loved to see my comeback also because I had fought against certain evil practices in Malayalam cinema.”
They would have loved to see him act, anyway. They always have.

Thilakan was one of the most talented actor in the Malayalam film industry. His acting cannot be compared to anybody. His dialogs comes out like it was coming from his heart, which made a great impact on the audience.
He was ignored despite of his great acting during his last years of his career, who did will now recognize his loss to the film industry. His roles in the films make him immortal. May his soul be at peace.
Its a big loss for the Malayalam Film Industry. Currently there are no actors who can replace Thilakan.

With sorrows & Tears
We pay tribute to the greatest actor we ever had..who fought against the
odds!
An actor par excellence. According to me he is one notch above Mammootty and Mohanlal for his great versatility in acting as is evident from his portrayals in Yavanika, Nammukku Paarkam Muntirithoppukal, Nadodikattu, Mukachitram, Jaathakam, Panchavadi Palam, Indian Rupee, Panchagni, Kireedom, Kilukkam, Perumthachan, Gamanam etc etc. (OH! his portrayals are flashing before me as I jot down his great performances)
It can be rightly said that he often stole the thunder from the lead actors in his movies. I was always spellbound by his acting.
It was a pity and shame that Malayalam missed out on many prospective great acting roles due to the controversies in his final years.
Great great loss to Malayalam cinema. Deeply grieving. May his soul RIP.
What a great actor. R.I.P
I used to wonder what makes a performer different from the 100s who ply their trade out there. I still have not been able to list out the traits that make that difference, but watching Thilakan perform gives one an idea. Be it Perunthachan or Achyuthan Nair in Kireedam or Achyutha Menon in Indian Rupee, I believe we can seldom perceive another actor on those roles. Is it ‘Method Acting’.. . I don't know... but the sparkle of brilliance that distinguishes those roles were inevitably only Thilakan's.
Men come and go and that too is inevitable... but i am saddened to see this man go... perhaps there will not be another like him in my life time.
Salam my dear sir! You were truly a genius…
He was an embodiment of perfection in his field. The film world has suffered a great loss
by his demise. He was outspoken and worked for a cause and had to swallow the bitter pill
For his uprightness.
we miss u sir... deep condolence..
Sir,
We all pay homage to Thilakan, he will always remembered as a great actor who does not have any comparisons.
But I am sorry to say that this report is incomplete. You haven't mentioned one of the greatest achievements of him. He was honoured with Padmasree in 2009 for his contributions to art.
What a great actor, and what a pleasure it remains to watch him ply his
craft. God bless.
We lost a versatile actor of our Film Industry. We will long remember him for the roles played in films like Kireedam, Peruntachan,Spatikam,Nadodikattu etc to mention a few.. May his soul rest in peace.
Thilakan was a very marvelous actor who had portrayed several roles in
malayalam movies with such ease and simplicity that one can't write off
his mark even in future. Lets all pray for his eternal peace.
We mourn for the great lose of a legend.
Although I have seen him only in films, I feel as if I have lost a close family member.
Great actor.

Thilakan was one of the legends of Indian Cinema and his demise has left
a big Void in Malayalam cinema industry. He was a very versatile actor
and his performances in the movies such as Perunthachan, Kireedom,
Sphadikam, Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal to name a few are etched in the
memory of his fans as well as movie lovers all over the world. He was
one of the big stalwarts of Malayalam cinema and he will be missed for
Sure. May the legend's soul Rest in Peace!
We will miss him for sure ....
Thilakan is a down-to-earth actor. Whatever roles he portrays, he actually enlivens in them. His portrayal of a tough father in 'Spadikam' with Mohanlal will be remembered for ever.
I would like to quote a sentence which Thilakan said in one of his last interviews: There is a rhythm in songs, we know that. But from my experience in acting let me tell you that there is a similar rhythm in acting also. When the director says "ACTION" from behind the camera you need to start acting in a particular rhythm like 1..2 GO! and all the directors who worked with me used to say that I used to excel that to perfection. And being a movie lover of all languages' and being a person who has watched a lot of movies I can without a shadow of a doubt that he is one of the finest actors... Hope the upcoming actors take inspiration from this man. Tearful adieu!
We can only grieve and say rest in peace to a wonderful artist who held us spellbound by his unmatched acting excellence others could only be envious of. The Malayalis and the Malayalam cinema has lost a talent that can't be replaced easily! We mourn for the lose of a fine man who was so precious!
He resembled Morgan Freeman. This gave me thought that Thilakan is an actor born in the wrong part of the world.Be it the affectionate grandfather in Moonampakkam or the insane ex servicemen in Mookillarajyathu. This actor has proven his versatality.Perhaps the generations yet to come may not know his real identity of being 'Thilakan' they would like to address him with multiple names from the roles he did. There is no replacement but the upcoming actors need to learn from this man.He will be missed but those chracters are immortal. The drama in the stage called world is over.A big standing ovation from the spectators.Good bye to a legend

An outstanding and remarkable actor. The void left by this virtuoso performer cannot be filled by anybody else, an irreparable loss to the Kerala and Indian cinema. The skills and the quality of his acting is tremendous. The roles portrayed by this eminent actor was new theatrical discoveries, the gravity he possessed, proving many of the roles he mantled could only done by him. He is a doyen, he is the master and we are saddened by his demise.
Sure, he belongs to another NATION where the greatest NATIONAL AWARD
awaits him... Take good heart, ye beloved ones!!
